Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed on Friday that the video game giant does not plan to launch a new model of the Switch in 2020.
Rumors that Nintendo would soon announce a more powerful version of its successful Switch Pro hybrid console have persisted for several months.
Media specializing in video games speculated that such a machine would allow Nintendo to better compete with Microsoft and Sony, which plan to offer their next generation consoles towards the end of the year.
Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch in 2020 , the company CEO said in a conference call with shareholders, while noting the importance for Nintendo to
communicate the appeal of [ses] two models of Switch to the public.
Nintendo sold since last September a more compact and exclusively portable model of the Switch called Switch Lite. It sells for $ 260, while the original model of the console, which can also be connected to a television, costs $ 400.
Sony and Microsoft both offer upgraded versions of their consoles: the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X.
More Successful Than SNES
The fact that the Switch is less powerful than the already existing consoles of its competitors does not prevent it from selling like hotcakes: we learned this week that it had crossed the milestone of 50 million consoles sold, already overshadowing the Super Nintendo after less than three years on the market.
Nintendo also announced Thursday that the production of the Switch would be somewhat affected by the coronavirus epidemic, which has affected China, the country where the console is manufactured.
